Customers often inquire if we have PFAS FREE certificates for our products. What is PFAS exactly? What fabrics typically contain it? As a company founded on making products that are safe, sustainable and, leakproof period underwear, we receive this inquiry a lot: “are your products PFAS-free?” The quick answer is yes. Our fabrics have been certified PFAS-free and Oeko-Tex certified. But let’s talk more about PFAS, why it is bad, and which fabrics have it.

What Are PFAS?

PFAS (per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances) are synthetic chemicals created in the 1940s that have gained popularity due to their strong carbon-fluorine bonds that make one resistant to water, grease, and stains. It has been widely used in textile applications among other industries because of its durability.

PFAS are made up of thousands of chemicals, but the most well-known are PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) and PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonic acid).  However, the durability of PFAS also means it does not break down in the environment or human body and can last for decades, earning it the name “forever chemicals.”

Which Fabrics Typically Contain PFAS?

Outdoor and performance wear: including rain jackets, hiking pants, and water-resistant shoes, which are order made with PFAS in the material to repel.
Period underwear and leakproof fabrics: Some companies coat the fabric with PFAS to prevent leaking.
Stain-resistant carpets: Settings carpets and rugs are coated with PFAS to resist spills, stains and water.
Upholstery fabrics: Furniture products are treated with PFAS for stain and oil resistance.

If a fabric is labelled as “waterproof,” “stain-resistant”, or “oil-repellent,” it most likely contains PFAS unless otherwise noted.

The Hidden Costs of PFAS in Textiles

PFAS in fabrics pose serious risks:

Environment: These are “forever chemicals” that will not break down and will pollute any and all sources of water, soil and ultimately any ecosystem.

Health: PFAS build in the human body over time, and scientists have linked long-term exposure to cancer, changes to hormones, liver damage, and negative developmental outcomes in children.

Regulation: Many governments are starting to place strict bans on PFAS, and the EU is currently seeking to ban thousands of PFAS, while the US is beginning to phase out certain chemicals.
